Indonesia sets 6 Million Tourist Arrivals Accelerated Target for 2007

After a working meeting with the Department of Culture and Tourism on Monday, 12 February, Vice President Yusuf Kalla announced that the government had decided to accelerate tourist arrivals to Indonesia this year to 6 million, up from the previous target of 5.25 million 6o 5.5 million tourists.

To achieve this goal, the government plans to reactivate the 12 promotional offices in Indonesia’s main markets that were closed in the wake of the Indonesian economic crisis. The Vice-president will also discuss with the Minister for Transportation on ways to increasing air capacity and with the Minister for Trade to promote Tourism in conjunction with Trade and Investment. VP also instructed Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik to sit down with Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati to review the budget for tourism promotion. Results of further coordination meetings with related Ministers will be announced in two weeks time. 

Reacting to this policy, Chairperson of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association, Yanti Sukamdani, said that the accelerated target is achievable on condition that the government reformulate the tourism masterplan, work program and marketing and promotional budgets, in tandem with the private sector. 

Meanwhile, Kompas daily reported that foreign tourist arrivals in 2006 was down -2.61%, compared to 2005. The National Bureau of Statistics (BPS) data showed that a total of 4.871 million visitors came in 2006 compared to 5.002 million foreign visitors the year before .

The BPS further estimated that foreign tourism to Indonesia contributed US$4.4 billion dollars to the economy in 2006, which compares to US$4.5 billion generated in 2005, or a drop of -2.22%. The average length of stay in 2006 was 9.05 days, down slightly from the 9.09 days recorded in 2005.

Average expenditure per visitor in 2006 was US$913, an increase of +1.01% from the US$904 spent in 2005.
