Ground Breaking for Kuala Namu International Airport, Medan, North Sumatra

Monday July 03, 2006

Last week VP Jusuf Kalla officiated the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of Medan ’s new Rp. 4 trillion Kuala Namu international Airport in North Sumatra . Expected to replace Medan ’s Polonia Airport in 2009, Kuala Namu is located some 40 km. from Medan in the district of Deli Serdang, and is strategically located to be the region’s hub airport, said Jusuf Kalla, as reported in Bisnis Indonesia.

With a limited capacity of only 900,000 passengers per year, Medan ’s present Polonia airport has already far exceeded capacity as it processed over 4.5 million passengers in 2005. Polonia is also located too close to town, and has a short runway of only 2.9 km. of which 2.625 km. may be used.

Therefore, development of the Kuala Namu Airport is most urgent, and will be constructed in three stages. The airport will have a runway of 3.75 km. to accommodate wide-bodied aircrafts. The new airport is designed to process between 8 million to 9 million passengers, and 10,000 aircraft movements per year.

Kuala Namu will also be ’s first international airport connected by rail, allowing passengers to check in at the city terminal in Medan , a distance of some 30 minutes from the airport.

For its construction, PT Angkasa Pura II will utilize internal funds, said State Enterprises Minister, Sugiharto, as well as loans made available by the Asian Development Bank through Budget 2007.
